A GEM FOR MOROCCAN, FRENCH AND GYPSYISH; CAFE GITANE INSIDE THE JANE HOTEL

I am addicted to The Jane Hotel, especially Cafe Gitane in the Jane, and it’s Avocado, Lemon Juice, Olive Oil, Chili Flakes on Seven Grain Toast and Dukkah. Since first introduced to the cafe, I have been back every week. Katrina Kelly’s Cafe Inspiration

PLAYING BY AIR: A SYMPHONY OF ACTION & COMEDY, JUGGLING AND VARIETY SHOW AT THE FRINGE FESTIVAL NEW YORK CITY

About a year ago I had a profound inclination to learn how to juggle. I had always been fascinated by my sister and best friends ability to juggle. So by incessantly watching numerous instructional youtube videos, I mastered 3 ball juggling. Yet, that just was not enough. If I could juggle three balls, then why not four. This time I signed up for a class taught by Rod Kimball, who taught me some 2 and 3 ball tricks and stalls. Occasionally, Michael Karas would fill in as instructor. I befriended Michael via facebook which led to an introduction to Playing by Air, a variety performance group he is in. Playing by Air is formed of 4 incredibly multi-talented individuals who wholeheartedly love what they do; 3 master jugglers and a skilled masterful violinist. Just being in their presence is creatively contagious and delightful. I have just returned from watching their opening show for the NYC International Fringe Festival. I am utterly enamored and awed. This show is more than mere juggling. It is the crème de la crème of juggling/variety shows. They don sophisticated black suits paired with ties the colors of rainbows. It was humorous, well crafted and jubilantly entertaining. The children and adults cried out bewildering oohs and ahhhs throughout the entire performance. Hip-hop, dance, classical, Fat Boy Slim and some children’s tunes accompany the variety acts. It has an essence of an understated, clever cirque du soleil, but it is entirely their own and one-of-kind. At the end there were Q & A for the performers; one lady stated it best when she said how inspired she was, and that it made her believe anything is possible. Without further ado, Katrina Kelly is off to practice juggling…

NEO-GOTHIC LIMELIGHT MARKETPLACE, A LUXURY MALL IN NEW YORK CITY

I strolled through the newly renovated Limelight Marketplace yesterday. This venue has a historic and prolific 163-year-old history. It was once a historic church, then a notorious nightclub. Most recently it was renovated to a three-story labyrinth-like maze of luxury shops keeping some of its original and important architecture integrities; exposed brick and stained glass rose windows. And in the aftermath, threw in some new, fierce and unapologetic DECO and Glam Glam. Today you will find an array of shops inside; Petrossian caviar; olive oils at Carter & Cavero; and Jezalin’s, a fancy-food shop stocked with breads, charcuterie, cheeses and condiments, Whisk, a cookware shop based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, MarieBelle chocolates; Mari’s New York brownies; Butterfly Bakeshop; Cupcake Stop; the Little Candy Cake Company; the bakery Wanna Hava Cookie; Baci Gelato; Miss Tea, for teas and accessories; and Jala frozen yogurt. My favorite nook was the top floor MarieBelle tearoom-nice view. And the talk of the town is that Grimaldi’s pizzeria will take on space there. By: Katrina Kelly

IN THE NAME OF LOVE, LOVERS, LOVE SONGS BY BEACH HOUSE & LOVE RINGS

I am so enchanted by Victoria Legrand’s voice

BEACH HOUSE LIVE LOVER OF MINE

You hear my cry, lover of mine
No tear in the eye or fear in my mind
The forest is thick and you don’t recognize
We parted our lips and we reached from inside

In a wide open field we know we can feel
Awake and unreal, off to nowhere
Off to nowhere

Need more people to be satisfied
No fear of a god and prayer for the night
You come into our minds and you rush through our lives
We parted our lips and we reached from inside

In a wide open field we know we can feel
Awake and unreal, off to nowhere
Off to nowhere

The only thing you’ve got
You know you’re better off without it

Youngest fire, you decide
You decide what is right

Near yet so far, isn’t it?

Viennese Glamour and Old World Splendor at Cafe Sabarsky

This cafe is housed in the German-Austrian art museum Neue Galerie. Not only does this historic Beaux-Arts mansion house some of my favorite works of art and decorative objects, the cafe is unsurpassed in Manhattan. This entire setting is my notion of elegant beauty. I usually go for brunch there with my dear Austrian friend. Her family runs an Austrian bakery and confectionery in the charming town of Weiz, Austria (in which I have had the delight and pleasure of tasting some of their chocolate! YUM). She states that Cafe Sabarsky is the most authentic Austrian setting in the city. So if it wins the heart of my Authentic Austrian friend, then it is certainly worthy! It evokes a real Viennese Glamour and an Old World splendor. I am ready to go back for more visual inspiration!

Inside Out by In Sook Kim at Gana Art Chelsea

Are you someone with a natural curiosity of what one does in the privacy of their own space? Then have a peep at this artist. In Soon Kim, a Korean artist that has orchestrated a body of work around this innate human curiosity. She stages an organic natural existence within a contained geometric room. She brings vitality and reveals the undisguised functionality to raw architecture fleets.“Each interior is meticulously lit and staged with scenarios and actors. The jewel-like colors and sophisticated finish of the scenes captured behind the glass enhance the sense both of a supremely stylized modern aesthetic and the caged loneliness of the protagonists on show, themes in all of Kim’s works which she describes as “seeing by feeling.” from gana art- April 1 – May 8

Inspired by Jeff Koons Balloon’s: Katrina Kelly

Any time I hear of Jeff Koons, the artist, I instinctively laugh, a seriously sincere laugh with a slight smirk and smile. I fell in love with Jeff’s work in one of my Art History college classes years ago. It was either Puppy or The Pink Panther that got me. So this morning when I read the Arts & Leisure section of the New York Times I was giddy to see him on the front page being interviewed by Randy Kennedy. Is it serendipity that this creator of mega-size cartoon and whimsical art has the last name Koons? Regardless, one day I will have a gargantuan size balloon from Koons.
